Cape Lancia Museum

The Lancia Library

Written by Felix Furtak. Posted in Cape Lancia Museum

Since we took on full time Lancia car and maintenance in 1993 we have forever collected every piece of paper relating to the brand. Over the last 30 years we added a lot of material from TAK and Viglietti Motors. The late PW Immelman also let some paper trail including the leftovers form the Lancia Stable. We also took over the collection of Reuben Isaacs which brought the documents from former Cape Town Lancia Enthusiasts. Last not least we acquired a lot of factory documentation from the 2 stock-clearances that we acquired oversees.
But there are also negatives: WE have been building for the last 10 years, and the permanent dirt was not kind to the fragile vintage paperwork. Worst of all 2 years ago during the ill fated roof replacement, a lost of documents were forever destroyed in a flood ( We employed A local roofing company, a fatal mistake ).

All of this was supposed to be housed on the first floor in our old office space.  The room is spacious and suitable, however my son has taking on music, and has claimed half oft the space as his music room, which I want the other half to restart my hobby of vintage music reproduction. Lastly to have the public walking through the house is not ideal.

Enters Khungekas coffee shop:  It was always asking for a sitting space, which naturally would be on a mezzanine on top of the coffee counter. So the original plan called for this:

Then came the idea to increase the area and actually house the library on top. Years later the plan ended up like this:

So what is there to see:

- Collection of  classic car magazines and Club newsletter. Prominently naturally feature the crankhandle club as well as the UK Lancia club.
Also a lot of Classic Car Africa and Markt für klassische Automobile, the leading German magazine.
Very interesting are magazines form other less know Lancia Club, like Switzerland and Australia.
The magazines date all the way back to 1990

- Many photo albums relating to Lancia present and past

- Original Lancia Service Manuals spanning from the Lancia Aurelia to the Lancia Zeta
There is also a selection of FIAT manuals

- Original owners manuals from Flavia all the way to the Kappa.

- Original Lancia Parts books from the Lancia Lambda until the end of books, which is when the microfiche took over

- Hundreds of original Microfiches

- Majors works written about the LANCIA brand.

- Papers and Photos left from the Lancia Stable

- Lancia advertising material, Original brochures from many famous cars including the Delta S4

- Original LANCIA tooling

- Original LANCIA diagnosis instruction for the later models

- Lancia Sales documentation form South Africa with chassis numbers.

- As  highlight, we do showcase an IBM terminal that will be connected to an original IBM server and revive the original TAK POS system form the 90ties

-  We will get an overhead projector to screen original Lancia movies from CINE-FIAT, that are not in the public domain.

The Library will be open to the Public on Saturdays. The building costs were considerable, estimated to be 40k. Hence we kindly ask for a modest contribution of R 50,- which will include a double cappuccino.
Sadly we will not hire any books out, but we can make copies where needed.

We have a large table that sits 5-6 people so you can meet on a Saturday to enjoy Italian history with a shot from the Cimbali M27

Parquet flooring in the Lancia Museum

Written by Felix Furtak. Posted in Cape Lancia Museum

Many moons back we acquired some dozen's of bags with old parquet flooring. Now that the building operations are coming to an end, those bags were still standing around. Originally we had planned to find sponsors to tile the museums floor, but that never saw the light of day. So why not using the wooden floor that is already there ? Furthermore, wood is warm and soft, and you can safety drop a hammer. So we put it all down now, and I am very happy about it.

Fitting a floor also forces you to uplift all the rubbish that has accumulated over the years. In the end the place had degenerated to a storage for old cardboard boxes. In the process, we also revived 2 of my oldest vehicles, the Fulvia Sport and the 2000HF . They had no started in 5 10 and 5 years respectively.  I am very happy they came back to live fairly easily, the fuel injection car being much easier, once it starts it runs smooth, while the Fulvia carburetors are not that well as expected.  Please enjoy the photos underneath. A big thank you to my family who made a joint effort to make it happen.

Cape Town Lancia Club get together at the Museum

Cape Lancia Club Get Together

6 August 2022

We had a great get together on Saturday morning 6 August, with a welcome break in the rainy weather. The coffee was great, as usual and good conversation around interesting cars made the morning special. A special thanks to all who all who dropped in, especially on a long weekend.

We were graced by the arrival of  Dickon Daggit's 1928 Lambda. A special treat and a very photogenic car! Great to see this historic model ready to make the run from Hout Bay.

Aldo Pomario's Monte Carlo, undergoing a fuel injection retrofit was the engine of interest for the day.

Dave Alexander arrived in style with a Charmor, a Morgan 3-wheeler fitted with a Moto Guzzi 1100cc motor. Not a Lancia, but a pleasure to look at nonetheless.

Heinrich Spreeth's Fulvia, Johan du Toit's '93 Thema Turbo LS and the seemingly endless collection of Lancia's in the Museum and workshop rounded off the day.

The Cape Lancia Museum needs your help:  While the costs of the building has in large been financed by the sale of Lancia Spare parts as well as the sale of internet access to the local community, the museum now needs to be filled with live.

We need interior decoration and events management as well as curation of out endless Lancia items.

For that we need financial contributions to make it all happen.

Youth developement

The combustion engine only has a short time to live. According to projections, the production of internal combustion engines will seize in the next 5 years. All major car manufactures are now taking electrification serious.

Even to day few mechanics know how to service a carburetor or a distributor with points as those technologies are already obsolete for decades.

yes in a world of fast moving instant gratification, the internal combustion engine has something tangible to it...

Having hands on skills can be immensely gratifying, in a world of touch screens...

We would like to share that with the local community.
